There are fears a dog rescued in Longford this week may have been used for ‘dog baiting’.

The practice involves setting a smaller animal as ‘practice’ for bigger dogs to attack who are then themselves used in illegal dog fighting events.

A dog with serious injuries was reported to the animal welfare charity ‘My Lovely Horse’ after it was spotted wandering in an are of Longford in recent days.

Another local resident managed to entice the dog into a shed and secure it after the charity put up an appeal for people to watch out for the injured animal.

The small terrier-like dog was collected the following morning by the charity where it has since been treated by a vet.

Jenny Spring from ‘My Lovely Horse’ says all the evidence seems to point to the little dog being used for illegal fighting.
