The road to the selection and establishment of the centre was a rocky one, with the Newtownforbes centre the second selected by health experts for the Longford region.

Preparation works for the opening of the Longford vaccine centre are almost complete.

Infrastructure work on the site at the Clonguish GAA facility in Newtownforbes has been finished with 10 inoculation booths along with registration, waiting and observation areas all ready for the centre to open at the start of May.

The facility will begin vaccinating those between the ages of 65 to 69 with AstraZeneca who have registered on the HSE vaccine portal, beginning the week of the third of May.

According to HSE officials, remaining staff vacancies will be filled and vital IT equipment will be transferred to the centre over the next week.

With Longford County Council also set to tarmac the carpark in stages next week.

Centre Manager, Carmel Breadon, says the local authority and Clonguish GAA club have been vital partners in the set up of the facility.
