Work on a major extension of a regional greenway into Athlone town, including a new cycle bridge across the Shannon, is due to begin by the end of Summer.
The design process for the extension of the Maynooth to Athlone greenway to Athlone Castle from the Marina is almost complete, with tenders set to go out next week.
The works on bringing the greenway from Whitegates to the Shannon at Athlone Marina recommenced in March and are due to be complete by August, with construction on the new bridge and extension set to begin directly after.

It's hoped that the section of the greenway from the Marina to Athlone Castle, and the new cycle bridge will be operational by Easter 2023.
