It is hoped to be completed by early 2023.

Work on the building of the new cycle and pedestrian bridge in Athlone will begin in earnest in the spring of 2022.

Engineers charged with building the structure as part of the Dublin to Galway greenway have been on site for several weeks now and excavation and preparatory work has been taking place on both sides of the river Shannon.

The new bridge will span the river from near the decking area of the Radisson hotel across to the Luan Gallery.

Michael Kelly, who is senior executive engineer for the Dublin Galway greenway, says some trial piling work has already been carried out on the bed of the river, but more significant works will take place in the next few weeks and building in earnest will begin in the Spring.

He says work on the bridge will also be determined by seasonality of the fisheries, and by navigation issues, but it's intended it will be finished by early 2023...
