The cutting and burning of turf in Irish homes has once again become a major bone of contention as measures are put forward to reduce our carbon emissions

Longford Westmeath Minister Robert Troy says he's told Minister Eamon Ryan there has to be an appropriate lead in time to any restrictions on people cutting and buying turf to heat their homes.

The Fianna Fail TD was commenting on the controversy in recent weeks about plans to ban turf cutting and selling from September the 1st.

While Tánaiste Leo Varadkar has said the plans have been 'paused', there's still concern the Minister intends going ahead with the move later in the year.

Minister Robert Tory says he's been talking to Eamon Ryan about the issue, and believes he doesn't intend to target people who cut their own turf.

He says people in the midlands have already suffered the closure of Bord Na Mona and the power stations, and banning turf cutting or burning can't be rushed through.
