Urgent financial support needed for childcare sector says local provider

Local providers say the rate of pay is not attracting new workers to fill the increasing gaps.

A Roscommon childcare provider believes the Government must increase the rate of pay for early year teachers.

221 million euro in core funding will be made available to the sector in September, for those who agree to freeze their fees.

However just three months out questions remain over how exactly the fund will be managed.

Hundreds of providers are expected to gather outside Leinster House tomorrow opposing the fixing of rates but local provider Amy Dowd feels parents shouldn't face further costs and says the bigger issue is to tackle the minimum wage.

The Cuan Bhride Manager believes low pay is not attracting workers into the industry resulting in fewer childcare places being available.
