A native of Aughavas, Co Leitrim, Tony McGovern was a prominent figure in Leitrim GAA and enjoyed a long career in the haulage, property and hospitality sectors.

Tributes have been paid this week to a well-known Leitrim businessman and philanthropist who passed away yesterday. A native of Aughavas, Co Leitrim, Tony McGovern was a prominent figure in Leitrim GAA and enjoyed a long career in the haulage, property and hospitality sectors. The main stand in Pairc Sean Mac Diarmada in Carrick-on-Shannon bears his name, as well as the GAA pitch in Ruislip, London, which the Leitrim man provided financial support for during its €5 million redevelopment.

Tony McGovern was renowned for his generous donations to local projects and his involvement in the community. Speaking to Shannonside, former Leitrim County Board Secretary Tommy Moran said Mr McGovern's generosity extended far beyond Aughavas and his native county:
