The former Fine Gael Town Councillor for Longford worked hard for the people of the town.

Tributes are being paid to former Fine Gael Town Councillor in Longford, the late Peter Clarke who passed away at the weekend.

He began his political service on the then Longford Urban District Council or UDC, in 1967 and served until 2004.

He was re-elected five times in 1974, '79, '85, '94, and '99, and served as Cathaoirleach three times during his 37 years on the local authority.

Longford UDC became Longford Town Council at the beginning of 2002 and he also had the distinction of being the first mayor of the re-named body in the first half of 2002.

The present Cathaoirleach of Longford County Council is Fine Gael's Peggy Nolan who began her career in the 90's.

She says Peter Clarke worked hard for the people of the town and left a great legacy:
