Popular walks in Leitrim and Roscommon are set to receive a promotional boost.

Three walking trails in the Shannonside Northern Sound region are among 31 trails nationwide that are being added to the government's "Walks Scheme".

The scheme provides funding to farmers and other landowners to maintain walking trails that travel through their holdings.

Eight new Rural Recreation Officers are also being appointed to enhance outdoor amenities, and a new Officer will be in place in Co Cavan.

The Department of Rural and Community Development says it will work with over 2,400 landowners to open up the countryside to walkers, hikers and tourists.

In Co Cavan, 11 landowners will receive funding to maintain "The Cavan Way", which is a 26 kilometre walking trail.

In Co Leitrim, 18 landowners will facilitate access to the 4 kilometre Arroo Trail, while in Co Roscommon, nine landowners will be funded to maintain the 38 kilometre Lung Lough Gara Way.
