Tánaiste Leo Varadkar has said he's sorry Lynsey Bennett's case against the HSE wasn't settled sooner.

The gravely ill mother-of-two settled her case yesterday following a legal battle over the handling of her smear tests.

Following the CervicalCheck scandal then Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said no woman involved should have to go to court.

Since then a number of women have had to go through legal proceedings, the latest being 32 year old mother of two Lynsey Bennett.

Leo Varadkar told the Dáil earlier not all cases could avoid legal proceedings.

The Dáil heard these women have been let down by the government, with Labour leader Alan Kelly warning there will be many more cases.

Sinn Féin's Pearse Doherty described it as a scandal, and said what was promised to the women involved needs to be delivered.
