St Brigid’s club notes week ending August 16th.

SFC: Our seniors had a very impressive championship victory against Elphin in the final group game on a scoreline of 3-17 to 1-12.

After a very entertaining first half  in Kiltoom where it was nip and tuck, we led by a point at half-time, 1-7 to 1-6.

However, a powerhouse of a second half display where we outscored Elphin 2-10 to 1-6 secured the points and a quarter-final place. As a result, we have topped the group and are seeded for the upcoming draw.

The two stand-out performers on the day were Ben O’Carroll, especially in the first half before suffering a knock, and Brian Derwin in the second. Ben had a haul of 0-6, three frees, and Brian scored 2-6.

Well done to Kenny and the FAS lads for having the pitch in pristine condition.

JFC: Our juniors recorded their second successive victory in the JFC A championship by securing the points against St. Ronan’s in Tulsk last Sunday.

Full time score: St. Brigid's 1-12, St. Ronan's: 0-13.Our lads got off to a slow start,  finding themselves four points down before we registered our first score on the board in the 12th minute and then edging in front at the break, 0-7 to 0-6.

Both teams traded points in the second half before the first key moment came in the 26th minute when substitute Conor Quinn goaled to put us five points in front.

The second key moment came in the 32nd minute with our lads leading by 1-12 to 0-12. Ronan’s were awarded a penalty but ‘keeper Seamie Smith pulled off  his second great save of the day to make sure of the victory in what was a nervous finish.

Team: Seamus Smith; Conor MacNeice; Jimmy Curley; Darren Carroll; Luke Griselain; Eoin Minagh; Shane Fuery; Brian O’Hara Duggan; Oisin O’Reilly(0-3, free, ’45); Gavin Byrne; Billy McDonnell; Tom O’Carroll(0-2, one free); Kealan Byrne; Ian O’ Rourke ; Eoghan Derwin(0-6, 2 frees, mark). U-14s: Following a good opening championship victory away to Tulsk earlier last week, our U-14 team secured their second win last Thursday when they overcame St. Barrys/Kilglass Gaels in Kiltoom. This was a much tighter affair than the final score line suggests.

An unanswered scoring blitz in the third quarter effectively decided this game. Full-time score: St Brigid's 5-18 Kilglass Gaels/St. Barry's 1-12 Squad: Dylan Dennehy-Lyons,  Ryan Lawless,  Jack Kinahan, Ben Ward, Brendan Ferry, Matthew O' Connor,  Finnan Kilcommins, Tom Warby, Adam Feeley, Josh Dowling, James Morris, Kian Mulligan, Charlie O'Carroll,  Michael Henehan,  Niall Daly, Jack Lennon, Cathal Ferry, Sean Brennan and Conor Skehan.

Ladies Notes: Our Intermediate ladies secured an important Round 4 victory in Kiltoom against Castlerea on Sunday morning last.

Full-time score: St Brigid's 5-13, Castlerea 3-10. They now face Padraig Pearses in the next round on Sunday morning in Kiltoom at 11 am.

U-16s: St Brigid’s Under 16 girls beat table-topping Oran on Tuesday of last week in Kiltoom to continue their resurgence in this year’s championship. Full time score:  St Brigid’s 5-7, Oran 2-4.

In a match played in sweltering heat and with no wind, the St Brigid’s ladies built their win on the back of a hugely impressive defensive display that restricted Oran to just seven scores over 60 minutes.

Emma Gallagher was a rock in the centre of defence and her full backline partners Marie Flatley and Katie Irwin used their strength and skill to thwart attacks time and time again when Oran did fight their way through the St Brigid’s lines.

Each time the St Brigid’s defence won the ball, there were options available to launch attacks passing the ball upfield through Kara Gallagher and Captain Johanna Hughes who were both whirlwinds of motion throughout the whole match.

The scores were level after the first quarter as both teams got the measure of each other and St Brigid’s had edged ahead by two points at half time when both teams had a chance to recover and rehydrate after 30 minutes hard running under a strong sun.

The second half saw St Brigid's move up through the gears and begin to dominate in all areas of the pitch.

Leading from the front, Abbie Murray was in unstoppable form beating the Oran keeper three times with well-placed shots into the back of the goal. Going into the final quarter, Brigid’s were seven points up and rather than protecting their lead, they pressed on to outscore Oran in the final quarter 7 points to three to seal a very satisfying win.

The St Brigid's girls coped extremely well with the sweltering conditions and they must be commended for their preparation and hydration work in the days leading up to the game as this was evident with their relentless momentum in which the first ten minutes mirrored the last ten in efforts and intensity.

Finally a special mention to Lara Deehan and Keely Salmon who were called up to the squad late from under 14 due to the shortage of numbers available.

The two of them blended in perfectly with the team and played with tenacity, skill and confidence that belied their age, producing two of the best football displays out on the pitch.

It is games like this one where we see some of the wonderfully talented athletes wearing the red and green for St Brigid’s ladies that show the future for ladies football in Kiltoom is very bright.

The girls are away to Clann na nGael on Tuesday, August 18th. Team: Amy Gallagher; Marie Flatley; Emma Gallagher; Katie Irwin; Jane Hennelly; Doireann Ni Ruairc; Norah Canny; Johanna Hughes (c) (1-1); Sally O’Hara.; Kara Gallagher; Abbie Murray (3-1); Hannah Lennon. Faye Loftus (1-4); 14: Shauna Loftus; Sarah O’Rourke (0-1); Jessica Collins; Lara Deehan.

U-14s: Well done to the U14 girls who notched up a good win in the Division 1 championship on Thursday evening last away to Oran. Full-time score: St Brigid's 7-8, Oran 3-5. The girls are away to Clann na nGael this Thursday at 7pm.
