A special mass will take place in Ballymahon tomorrow evening to mark the departure of the last Sisters of Mercy from the town.

The last three nuns who've been living in a house on Main Street in the town for the past number of years will be leaving it on this day next week.

The Sisters first came to Ballymahon in 1872 and were heavily involved in education in the area since that time.

Tomorrow evenings mass in St Mathews Church is expected to be attended by a large number of ex-pupils and their families from the Convent school.

Sr Maura Fay who has lived in the town for several decades was a music teacher there for several years and is still involved with the Innyside Singers group.

She says they've made a lot of friends in the area over their time in Ballymahon and it is an emotional time….

'When it was in the distance it wasn't too bad, but now people are saying we're going to miss you and things like that.

You get emotional about things like that, you're hearing a lot about that now, when we were leaving and closing down the Mercy in Ballymahon, we got cards and greetings from the girls thanking for the happy years they had in school.

We've made great friends among them.'
