Almost 100 people work with the service in this region.

A special ceremony is being held in Athlone this evening to recognise the work done by the Athlone and Midland Samaritans.

The 'address of recognition' was proposed by Deputy Mayor of Athlone Municipal District Aengus O' Rourke in February of this year.

There are 95 volunteers working with the service which responds to an average of 23,000 calls every year.

An outreach team also operates as part of the service, giving talks to schools and other community groups.

Councillor O' Rourke said the organisation deserved the highest recognition available to mark their 30 years of service to the local community.

The special ceremony is taking place this evening at the Council Chamber in the Civic Offices in Athlone.
