The Senior Planning Officer with Longford town says some parking spaces on the county town's Main Street will be sacrificed for cycle and pedestrian use in the coming years.

Donal Mac An Bheatha, says works will take place in the town as part of the regeneration and town renewal works which will see more positive discrimination towards pedestrians and cyclists.

The council is finalising plans to buy the former greyhound track on the outskirts of the town and the planning officer says it's hoped that a cycleway can be developed off the canal there to link it to the town, and on to the Albert Reynolds Peace Park.

He says the cycleway will run along some of the back streets, and that there will also be more emphasis for safe cycling in the centre of the town:
