Members of the public are being urged to attend their GP or out of hours GP service in the first instance if possible

Sligo University Hospital is continuing to deal with a major healthcare situation due to high numbers of patients on trolleys and an ongoing Covid-19 outbreak.

22 people are currently on trolleys or are waiting for beds in the hospital as of this morning, according to INMO figures.

Elsewhere in the facility, 18 people diagnosed with Covid-19 are receiving treatment in Sligo Hospital, with three of these in the critical care unit.

An outbreak of the virus onsite last week had resulted in several positive cases among staff and patients, with full separation protocols in place.

Sligo University Hospital had the highest number of patients with Covid-19 last week at 22, with the numbers now down to 18, the third highest nationwide today.

Due to the outbreak and the high numbers of people presenting at the Emergency Department, hospital management is asking the public to only attend A&E in the case of an emergency.
