Sligo-Leitrim gardai drafted in to help police Dublin city centre

The issue of bringing gardai to Dublin from rural divisions is being met with concern by the Garda Representative Association

Gardai from the Shannonside region have been drafted in to help with policing in Dublin city centre in recent months.

The Garda Representative Association is calling on the government to improve recruitment for the force in order to bolster numbers divisions across the country.

The recent GRA conference heard concerns over garda numbers in all areas and urged the government to step up recruitment.

Garda Damien McCarthy, who is based in Pearse Street garda station, is a GRA representative for central Dublin.

He has confirmed that gardaí based normally in Sligo-Leitrim have worked in the city centre on several occasions in recent months.

He feels local communities will suffer due to the movement of frontline gardaí away from their own divisions.
