Slight increase in number of local community Gardai

The number of community Gardaí in the Shannonside region has slightly increased since last year.

Community Gardaí are assigned to building relationships with local communities and civil society, including giving talks to schools, community groups and others.

Figures from the Minister for Justice show that there are 33 community Gardaí based in the region, an increase from 27 last year.

10 gardaí are based in the Roscommon/Longford division and 10 in the Sligo/Leitrim area, unchanged from last year.

Westmeath has seen an increase from 7 last year to 13 this year.

Nationally, there are 755 community gardaí, a decrease from the 2021 figure of 784.
