There has been a slight decrease in the number of drink and drug driving incidents in the Shannonside region according to new figures from the CSO.

The Recorded Crime report for quarter 3 of 2022 shows 100 incidents locally between June and September this year.

Figures recorded over the same period in 2021 recorded 104 such arrests between the two Garda Divisions.

37 people were arrested in the Sligo/Leitrim area in the three month period for driving under the influence of alcohol, while a further 19 were detected drug driving.

In the Longford/Roscommon Division, 27 people were stopped for drink driving, with 17 more arrested following road side drugs tests.

Gardaí across the country are now using the new DrugWipe roadside testing device which works like an antigen test to detect if someone has been using illegal drugs.
