The meeting heard that bus drivers are finding it difficult at the school due to traffic issues

Leitrim County Council is appealing to parents to change their habits around pick up and drop off times to ease congestion issues at a Carrick-on-Shannon secondary school.

The May meeting of the Carrick M.D heard this week that the situation was a "nightmare" for bus drivers at the Community School and that the facility was hoping to progress an extension to its own car park in the near future.

Responding to a motion from Councillor Paddy Farrell, senior engineer Darrgh O Boyle claimed that parents could park "200 metres away from the school and their children could walk to the gates."

The meeting heard that the Council had provided footpaths, crossings and that it was a "very safe piece of infrastructure" with parents urged to use a nearby car park or link road for parking, and that the issue at the school was the result of driver behaviour which needed to change.

It was also suggested that the school may examine staggering its closing times to ease congegstion.
