Longford and Cavan towns are among thirteen additional areas where the sale or burning of smoky coal is to be banned later this year.

The Minister for the Environment has announced that from the 1st of September, the sale and marketing of smoky coal will be prohibited in a number of locations, including in the Shannonside region.

Currently the ban is in place in Athlone, Mullingar, Drogheda  and towns with  a population above 10,000 have now been included.

The Minister hopes measure  will reduce air pollution and promote public health.
