The facility is currently providing care to almost 60 residents with a full capacity of 91.

It's expected refurbishment works at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Roscommon will be completed by the end of the month.

Upgrades to St Michael's Ward began in February 2022 forcing the closure of a number of patient beds.

In a statement to Shannonside FM the HSE say required refurbishments are well progressed and are scheduled to be completed by late November or early December.

Once complete, Community Healthcare West will liaise with HIQA for approval to progress the re-opening of the closed wards/beds.

Local Independent Councillor Tony Ward is welcoming the update however he say's he will be seeking further clarification on the progress of the new 50 bed unit at a health forum meeting next week.

''I welcome the news of the refurbishment of St. Michael's unit, it's long overdue.  I have a question down on the agenda of the HSE West Forum and that's in relation to the 50 bed unit there at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Roscommon, is there any issue that's holding or is it ready to go?''
