Roscommon records drop in unemployment last month

It's the only county in the Shannonside region which is recording a decrease in unemployment.

Roscommon was the only county in the Shannonside region to record a drop in its unemployment totals last month.

According to the latest data on the Live Register, Leitrim and Longford recorded slight rises in the number of people accessing some form of unemployment assistance in April.

Last month a total of 1388 people were unemployed in County Leitrim ,up ten on figures for March.

Compared to the same month last year, the number of people receiving unemployment support was down by almost 200 in the county.

Looking at figures for April 2019 the county's unemployment rate has dropped by 350 people in three years.

Longford also recorded a small rise in its Live Register total for last month, - up eight to 2124 since March.

Year on year, the county's total is also up 12, but down almost four hundred compared to April 2019.

Roscommon is the only local county to record a decrease in its unemployment total last month, with 1947 people on its Live Register, down sixteen on its total for March.

However it is still over 1,000 additional people unemployed in the county compared to the same month last year when 1816 people were on the Live Register.

1556 people are unemployed in Athlone with 2073 people on the live register in Mullingar.
