The €6.3 million facility is regarded as one of the best palliative centres in the country.

The new Roscommon Hospice will be fully accessible to patients in February 2023.

The eight-bed facility in Roscommon town is fully finished however limited services were being provided at the centre due to the finalisation of lease agreements and recruitment.

It's expected the unit will be fully operational by February 13th and will provide end of life care as well as day services, therapy rooms and a base for home care teams.

CEO of the Hospice Martina Jennings says a lot of work went into opening the unit as soon as possible.

''It's now opening on the 7th of February. The staff are starting there on the 7thof February with patients being admitted on the 13th of February. And that has taken a huge amount of work from a huge amount of people and in particular, Mary Garvey and her team at Roscommon University Hospital. And the Saolta Group and HSE estates and they've all worked together. All the beds have been ordered. A lot of the equipment has been ordered and they will be fitted coming up to Christmas and in the next couple of weeks.''
