Roscommon, Galway and Offaly have been shown to have the highest numbers of whooper swans in the latest swan census.

Nearly 300 volunteer birdwatchers , as well as staff from Birdwatch Ireland , and the National Parks and Wildlife Service took part in the census checking over 1,500 locations across the country.

A total of just over 19,000 of the migratory Whooper swans were recorded with around two thirds in the Republic of Ireland.

Brian Burke of Birdwatch says they were delighted to find an overall increase of 27%, and high numbers in Roscommon, Galway, and other counties…
