The former minister should have been given the space to stay in the role until he answered questions in the Dail says Senator Carrigy

Longford Westmeath TD and former Minister of State Robert Troy should have appeared before the Dail before resigning his Ministerial post.

That's according to local Fine Gael Senator Michael Carrigy who says he believes the TD should have been giving the space to stay in his position until the Dail returns.

The Fianna Fáil TD resigned last night after two weeks of controversy around his property holdings.

Deputy Troy said he makes no apology for being a landlord and his main mistake was a lack of due diligence.

Speaking to the Joe Finnegan Show today, Senator Carrigy says public representatives are answerable to the people at the end of the day.

I would have liked to see him get the opportunity as a public representative

But we are answerable to the dail who are answerable to the people

I feel he should be given that opportunity to allow SIPO to carry out what ever investigation they need to do and allow them to come before the Dail.

And allow all parties to put what ever questions they have to put before him in the Dail.

Reacting to yesterday evening's news Sinn Fein TD Claire Kerrane told the Joe Finnegan Show that politicians must make sure their dealings are transparent:

Robert Troy is a minister of State, he's around quite a long time.

I don't know if I buy, you know, mistakes made on forms very clearly marked January to December.

We have a huge responsibility in the roles we are in to be transparent, he wasn't, he knows that.

I think he made the right decision.
