The policy is in place despite seemingly low numbers waiting at the ED.

The Midlands regional hospital in Mullingar has enacted its ‘escalation policy’ due to a high number of people seeking medical treatment.

The hospital management has issued a warning to the public that long delays are being experienced by people attending the Emergency Department today and is asking patients to consider their care options via their GP, GP Out of Hours or Pharmacist before presenting to the Emergency Department.

They are assuring the public that patients who require urgent care will be prioritised.

According to the INMO’s Trolleywatch figures, seven people are on trolleys at the hospital today – with 18 at Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe and Sligo University Hospital.

Four people are waiting to be admitted at Cavan Hospital  and just seven at Our Lady of Lourdes in Drogheda.
