Public urged to shop local as non essential businesses open today

People are being urged to stay patient with staff, follow store rules and practice social distancing while heading back to the shops

Local businesses are urging the public across the Shannonside Northern Sound region to shop local as non-essential retail opened for the first time in a year today.

Many stores are reporting steady streams of customers, with numbers generally calmer than the pre-Christmas reopening.

Most businesses closed their doors in January after spiralling virus numbers forced the country into a 3rd national lockdown.

The sector employs over 280 thousand people, with many of these returning to work for the first time in months.

June 2nd is the next key date in the reopening process - by then hotels and b&bs can reopen for overnight guests.
