The festival began yesterday and will run until Sunday 31st of July.

Members of the public using the waterways across Lough Ree over the next week are being urged to be mindful of possible disruptions from the Shannon Boat Rally.

Waterways Ireland are warning masters of vessels that the event may disrupt normal operations during the week on the popular and busy lough..

Organised jointly by the Athlone and Carrick on Shannon Branch of the Inland Waterways Association of Ireland, the Shannon Boat Rally is a 9 day festival for boating enthusiasts.

Members of both branches will gather on Lough Ree from the 22nd of July to the 31st.

Vessels will meet at Portrunny this weekend, the Lough Ree Yacht Club on Monday and Tuesday, and Ballykeeran Lough on Wednesday.

Thursday and Friday will see the festival sailing to Coosan Point, before finishing at Athlone Town marina on the 30th and 31st.

Waterways Ireland has apologised for any inconvenience caused over the next week and is thanking customers for their co-operation.
