The Roscommon native died following a shocking incident in Dublin in late January.

A priest has described the death of a Roscommon man during the theft of his own car last month as a "cruel" and "callous" act.

Elphin native Ian McDonnell passed away in hospital in Dublin on January 29th, days after he was seriously injured as he attempted to prevent the theft of his vehicle outside his business.

Dozens of people from Dublin and Roscommon attended his funeral mass at St Patrick's Church in Elphin this morning and he will be laid to rest this afternoon in Caldra cemetery.

In his homily, Fr John Joe Gannon described the married father of three' s death as a symbol of a selfish society:

"You have lost him through cruel circumstances, through a callous act, that seems to indicate that among humanity, there is a loss of that virtue of humanity. That nothing matters but the individual, and their own desires and ambitions."
