Plaque to be unveiled in Boyle in recognition of the Grehan Sisters

The plaque will be unveiled this afternoon at 2pm.

A special plaque will be unveiled in Boyle this afternoon to mark the contribution of the Grehan Sisters to Ireland's musical heritage.

The sisters were singers and musicians and performed at their family pub in Boyle in the 60's and 70's, before going on to be recognised nationally and internationally.

The plaque is being unveiled at the site of the former Grehan's Pub, which is now known as a restaurant

They had a wide array of fans during their years including The Clancy Brothers, Seamus Heaney, Christy Moore and Kirsty Mc Coll.

Local historian Tony Conboy says the group was extremely successful during the folk-singing revival of the late sixties especially.

"First of all, they did the Boyle thing and then they went to Dublin to expand their recognition and their chances. And then they moved to England, because England was at that time exploding with folk clubs in England and so on. So they based themselves in Manchester. They actually played in a famous concert in the Royal Albert Hall in 1968 or 1969 - that was a big Irish concert with Paul Brady and that. That was when they were at their height in England. They were on BBC radio..."
