Planning permission has been granted for further restoration of the Ash Disposal facility of Lough Ree Power Station.

The land at Derraghan More near Lanesboro was used in the operation of the power plant to dispose of ash and waste materials generated through the burning of peat.

Plans submitted by Electricity Supply Board Networks DAC sought to construct an integrated wetland over a total area of 5 and a half hectares within the existing site.

A Natura Impact statement was prepared for the project, with the site itself licensed by the Environmental Protection Agency.

The development would include the formation of wetland cells that would help in the management and treatment of leachate arising from the Ash Disposal Facility.

Leachate is any contaminated liquid that comes from water moving through a solid waste disposal site.

A further objective of the application according to the planners report is to enhance the aesthetic value of the area with the proposed wetlands.
