The housing development involves over 100 houses and apartments at Cartrontroy Athlone

Planning for a major housing development in Athlone has hit a stumbling block.

An application submitted by Avenir Homes Limited for the construction of 127 housing units at Cartrontroy, Lissywollen in the Town had been due to be decided this month.

Due to the size of the project, it was classed as Strategic Infrastructure, meaning it bypasses Westmeath County Council and is considered directly by An Bord Pleanála.

Following deliberation by the higher planning authority, it's been decided that further consideration and amendment is needed in the application.

Plans include 65 houses and 62 apartments at the site, along with a creche and associated ground works.

It's the second major housing development in the area, with a major 576 unit development approved in June.

No timeline has been released as of yet by An Bord Pleanála for the resumption of the planning process.
