Planning approved for Ballymahon's former convent

The well-known building will be developed into a new community centre to provide multiple services in the south-Longford area.

Permission has been granted to convert the old Convent of Mercy building in the town into a community resource centre.

The Ballymahon Town Team have applied to turn the old building, which is located on spacious grounds behind St Matthew’s Church, into a multifunctional community resource centre.

With the approval, the Bridgeways Family Resource Centre in the Dean Egan Library will move over into the modern redeveloped site which will enhance access to local services.

The plan will also see extra space allocated to the existing Convent Day Care Centre which already operates from what was the original oratory of the convent building. The permission also includes a multi-purpose communal space to the rear of the building and refurbishment works to the property.

The plan was approved by county planners with nine conditions attached. PRO of the Ballymahon Town Team, Niall Dowler, says the community are happy to see the historical building refurbished and remain in use:
