Longford County Council has launched its pilot Night Time Economy plan for the town. The pilot scheme includes Longford as one of 9 locations in the country with others including Sligo, Drogheda, Galway City and Kilkenny. The plan is designed to attract new audiences and inspire new uses of existing spaces in Longford Town with funding opportunities of up to €3,000 for events.
As part of the initiative, a public consultation process will be held in the coming weeks to allow the public, business owners and community groups to have their say on the plan. Events are aimed to take place as part of the plan in September and October and can include such activities as sporting events, walks, runs, films screenings, live music or markets.
Local Councillor Gerry Warnock says the hospitality industry in the town has suffered following the Covid pandemic and cost of living crisis. He believes that initiatives such as this could give them much needed support:
