A decision will be made in the coming weeks.

A solar power company are seeking planning permission for the construction of a permanent battery energy storage system in South Roscommon.

TDC Community Solar Park Limited have submitted the application for the infrastructure adjacent to a previously approved solar farm at Taduff West and Taduff East near Athlone.

The company was awarded planning permission in 2020 for a major solar farm over 70 hectares in South Roscommon.

The battery storage facility would consist of up to 22 battery storage bays, each with 8 containerised battery modules, designed to house battery racks, control systems, fire detection and fire suppression systems as well as cooling systems.

The plans also include a substation unit, storage/office and a control room all provided in standard container units.

It's proposed to have a new access track linking the proposed facility to the approved Solar Park that would include one water crossing point.

Minor amendments to the layout of the permitted solar farm are also included in the application, along with the provision of two car parking spaces and an electric vehicle charging point.

County planners will make their decision on the application in July.
