People in the Shannonside Northern Sound region who may suspect they have had an episode of psychosis are urged to seek help immediately.

Signs of the condition include developing thoughts and perceptions that make it difficult to realise what's real or not and some people may hear voices or see things that are not there.

People may also be quiet and preoccupied or overwhelmed by their thoughts.

Leitrim and the north west is one of three areas involved in a clinical care programme for early intervention, where people are seen urgently and recevie interventions including cognative behavioual therpay, which is shown to be very effective.

Advanced Nurse Practitioner in the North West Sharon McGuinness says recent studies have shown that if treated early, people can fully recover from an episode.
