Many local residents and businesses have supported the move as a measure to see increased footfall in the town.

Leitrim County Council is to close a section of Main Street in Carrick-on-Shannon to traffic at weekends for the next six months.

The council opened a public survey on the issue of pedestrianising part of the town centre on a pilot basis just over two weeks ago.

The local authority received 327 responses to the survey and said the submissions demonstrated a strong appetite for a level of pedestrianisation in the town centre.

The council has now published a statutory notice of its intention to close Main Street in Carrick form the junction with Church lane/St Mary's Close to the junction with St Georges Terrace to traffic every weekend from 6 o' clock on Friday evening to 8 o' clock on Monday morning.

The pilot scheme would operate until the 1st of November.

The closing date for anyone who wants to lodge an objection to the scheme is Tuesday 15th of this month.
