The development of walking and cycling trails across the country in recent years have proved hugely popular with the public as a safe place to exercise and enjoy the great outdoors

Part 8 notice published for Mid Shannon Wilderness Park in Longford.

Several kilometres of tracks have been developed in the last year on bog land in and around south Longford.

The Bord Na Mona bridge at Kilnacarrow will also be redeveloped to create a link into Co Roscommon.

The scheme in its entirety is will be around 73 kilometres.

Just over 61 kilometres of greenway is being built along decommissioned Bord Na Mona rail lines.

A Part 8 notice has been published this week on the project.

It’s hoped that work on the bridge and connections of the trails can begin in the early part of next year.

Head of Regeneration with Longford Council Terry Rooney says the work in the county is just one part of what should be a major destination for the midlands in the future.
