The walks and amenities developed at Newcastle Forest just outside Ballymahon over recent years have led to a major increase in people visiting the area, especially at the weekends and many arrive to find the car park already full

Extra land needs to be found for car parking at Newcastle Bridge in Ballymahon as a matter of urgency.

That's according to local councillor Pat O' Toole who told this week's meeting of the Ballmahon Municipal District that the lack of spaces is causing a traffic hazard at the Ballymulvey junction on a regular basis.

Councillor O' Toole says the scenic location has seen a tenfold increase in visitors over the past two years.

Longford council executive John Mc Keon told the meeting the regeneration team has already discussed the issue, and they are hoping to make an application for funds to develop more parking there under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme.

Councillor O' Toole says he is aware of plans for a small car park down closer to the Center Parcs entrance, but he says the new spaces must be developed close to the bridge because that's where most people congregate to begin their walks.
