Almost half a tonne of litter was collected in five locations across the county of Longford.

Over one and a half tonnes of waste was collected across the Shannonside Northern Sound region as part of An Tasice's Clean Coasts' big beach clean this month.

The Big Beach Clean is an annual call to action which aims to protect and care for Ireland's waterways.

In Longford, volunteers organised clean-ups in five locations, removing almost half a tonne of litter and an additional 200 kg of waste was removed from three locations in Leitrim.

In Cavan, clean-ups took place in eight locations, removing approximately one tonne of litter while a further 200kg of waste was removed by almost 50 volunteers in Monaghan.

This year, a record number of over 400 clean-ups were organised across the country.

Speaking to Shannonside Northern Sound, Martina Leary, who runs the Leitrim Litter Picker account on Instagram encouraged everyone to do their bit for the environment.
