Over 400 housing commencement notices were recorded locally in the 12 months to May 2026.
That's according to GeoDirectory's residential buildings report, the details of which have been published today.
A commencement notice is a notification to a Building Control Authority that someone intends to carry out works or a material change of use to which the building regulations apply.
Counties Longford, Leitrim and Roscommon were all included in bottom five with 451 notices were issued in total.
In county Roscommon, 178 notices were issued.
County Longford saw 107 notices issued while 66 notices were issued in county Leitrim.
A total of 24,499 housing commencements were recorded in the 12 months to May 2026, representing a decrease of minus 41 per cent or 6,994 units.
Only 4 out of 26 counties registered an increase in the number of housing units commenced during the 12 months to May 2026, relative to the corresponding period to May 2025.
