Over 300 million euro in compensation has been paid out to patients by the Saolta Hospital Group since 2013
Figures released to Aontú show that the largest payouts in a decade were recorded last year
The Saolta Hospital Group includes Portiuncula Hospital Ballinasloe as well as Roscommon, Mayo, Sligo, UHG, and Merlin Park.
The payouts made by the group relate to incidents where patients suffered adverse incidents or medical negligence.
Figures show that in 2022, the Saolta group paid out around €76 million in damages.
That’s triple what was paid out in 2021, and almost seven times more than the figure for 2013.
The Ireland East Hospital Group, which includes Mullingar Regional Hospital paid out over €50 million under the clinical indemnity scheme in 2021.
This is over 15-times more than than the 2013 figure of just over €3 million
It’s argued the figures underpin the urgent need for investment with under-resourced and over-worked healthcare staff far more likely to make mistakes.
