No pesticides exceedances recorded in local water supplies in 2022

Pesticides must only be used where strictly necessary.

Public drinking water supplies in the Shannonside region were found to be free of any pesticide exceedances last year.

Water quality testing at supplies in Longford, Leitrim, Roscommon and Westmeath has shown no significant levels of chemicals.

MCPA is a chemical found in many herbicides and pesticides used in farming, gardening and the maintenance of sports grounds and is the most common chemical found in water supplies.

While no elevated levels were discovered locally, Uisce Eireann is urging the public to consider alternatives to chemical pesticides or herbicides when possible.

According to the utility, minimizing pesticide use not only helps to protect water quality but also has multiple wider environmental benefits.
