No agreement on emissions at final cabinet meeting before summer break

It's expected a deal may now be reached by the end of the week.

The last scheduled Cabinet meeting of the summer has finished without an agreement on carbon emission ceilings.

Talks are expected to continue today in an effort to reach a deal on how much the agriculture sector will have to do.

We know the range, a 22 to 30 per cent emissions cut for agriculture.

It's understood a landing zone could be between 24 and 26 per cent

But the political pressure is on

The Green Party wants as big a reduction as possible, with Minister Eamon Ryan saying action is needed.

Eamon Ryan said he hopes a deal can be agreed today.

Others in Government think it could take all week.

And Fianna Fáil TD Barry Cowen is one of a number who thinks the talks should be paused.

The fear in some Government circles there is kicking the item out to September would lead to more than a month of more divisive debate, with all the core problems still waiting for them on the other side.
