Uisce Éireann says night time restrictions are in place to conserve water supplies in south Leitrim. Residents in Drumshanbo, Ballinamore, Keshcarrigan, Fenagh, Cloone and surrounding areas are experiencing disruption today. It's following a mechanical issue at the Carrick-on-Shannon Water Treatment Plant. Uisce Éireann says it's hoping to return supply to the majority of customers this evening. The remainder of customers should have supply restored by tomorrow morning. However, in order to maintain a daytime supply, night time restrictions will be in place from 11 o'clock each night to 7 o'clock the following morning in the coming days.
Paul Kelleher from Uisce Éireann thanked customers for their patience while crews work to return water supplies. He says there's been a noticeable increase in demand in the south Leitrim area in recent weeks. This, along with a number of leaks, he said, had put further pressure on local reservoir levels. Customers are asked to continue their efforts to conserve water to allow reservoirs to replenish. Uisce Éireann says alternative supplies are available at The Food Hub in Drumshanbo, Mulvey's Hardware in Ballinamore, and McNamee's Garage in Kilvehy. There will also be alternative supply at Foxfield Church in Fenagh from 6 o'clock this evening. Customers are reminded to bring their own containers when taking water from the tankers and to boil water before consumption as a precautionary measure, per HSE advice.
Local Fianna Fáil Councillor Gary Prior says it's also been challenging time for farmers:
