The original plans for the legislation caused uproar in the rural community.

Turf sales in retail outlets, local newspapers and online will be penalised from this winter onwards.

The Irish Independent reports that new rules under the Air Pollution Act will come into effect on October 31st with local authorities tasked with enforcing the clampdown.

It comes as over 300 "turf for sale" adverts are currently on display on DoneDeal.ie.

People with turbary rights in respect of turf will be unaffected by the new regulations.
