11 historic landfills in the Shannonside region have been categorised as having a moderate to high risk of causing environmental damage. That's according to new research by The Journal Investigates. Just 10% of Ireland's historic landfills have been certified by the country's environmental watchdog - amid concerns over the possibility of pollution and leaking toxic waste.
Landfills in Castlerea, Ballymulvey, Cartron Big and Ballymaurice have been categorised as high risk. Conor O'Carroll from the Journal Investigates explained one of the main findings from the report:
