New local resource available for people needing help with gambling addiction
31/5/22 ***NO REPRO FEE*** Nationwide counselling service launched to help people experiencing harmful gambling. A new support service to assist people dealing with harmful gambling was launched today by Gambling Awareness Trust. Pic: Marc O’Sullivan The ‘National Problem Gambling Support Service’ is a collaboration between Gambling Awareness Trust and the Family Resource Centre National Forum (FRCNF), which will see 20 Family Resource Centres (FRCs) across the country provide professional and confidential counselling services to those experiencing harmful gambling and their families.

More and more p[eople are seeking help for gambling addictions each year.

The prevalence of gambling in Ireland is rapidly growing.

That's according to Amy Kelly, a psychiatrist at Boyle family resource centre who says Covid-19 and easy online accessibility has increased the numbers.

The Gambling Awareness Trust have today launched a new free support service for Roscommon, Leitrim and Sligo.

It provides a confidential counselling service to those with a gambling addiction and their families.

It will also conduct a number of workshops to educate young students in local schools about the impacts of a gambling habit.

Speaking following the launch Amy is encouraging people to use the service.

"Any phone call I get in, any email, any session, all are completely confidential and it's free. I'd encourage anyone to make that phone call or send that email s. It's a very community-based service and very important that people feel supported within their community and resource centres very much have an open door policy and all are welcome."
