The newly opened Strokestown Park House and Famine Museum is recording a high footfall, with a large number of international tourists visiting.

That's according to the General Manager John O'Driscoll who says the museum has welcomed people from places like the US, Germany and France since its soft opening on the 1st of July.

On Wednesday Minister Catherine Martin cut the ribbon at the local attraction which has underwent a five million euro refurbishment.

John hopes to grow visitor numbers in the coming months and believes the museum and house will be here for generations to come.

He says it continues to be busy despite the approaching off peak season.

"I suppose we're surprised as normally when we head into October it does get a bit quieter bar when we have a few events but no we're still seeing steady flow, the cafe is still busy. The visitor numbers keep growing and we want it to keep going that way and we've seen many days where the car parks have been overflowing with people coming to see the new famine museum, Strokestown Park House, and the fabulous new cafe".
