New Bishop of Ardagh and Clonmacnois to be ordained on Sunday

The ceremony gets underway at 3 o' clock on Sunday.

A large crowd is expected to attend the ordination of Bishop-elect Paul Connell as the new Bishop of Ardagh and Clonmacnois on this Sunday in St Mel's Cathedral.

The 65 year old Mullingar native was announced as the new Bishop of the diocese on April 5th of this year and will succeed Cavan native Francis Duffy who served as Bishop for 8 years prior to his installation as the Archbishop of Tuam in January of last year.

The Bishop-elect has a long association with St Finian's college in Mullingar where he served as a staff member and later as principal for several years.

This Sunday's ordination will see Archbishop Eamon Martin, Primate of All Ireland as principal consecrator, assisted by the Archbishop of Tuam Francis Duffy, and Bishop of Meath Tom Deenihan.

The new Apostolic Nuncio to Ireland will preside at the mass and the homily will be preached by Fr Michael McGrath of St Mel's Parish.
